‘I know I will have to stay close to Bale’

Bacary Sagna admits he will have to stick close to Tottenham winger Gareth Bale to limit his influence during Sunday’s North London derby.

The Wales international has impressed on the flanks for Harry Redknapp’s side this season, scoring 11 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions.

Sagna knows that he will have his hands full when marking the 22-year-old, but says the secret to containing him is to deny him space.

“He is a very good player, he was PFA Player of the Year last year and he deserved it,” Sagna told Arsenal Player.

“He is a great player, but every weekend we play against great wingers. He is extremely quick, that's why you have to stay close and make sure he does not come quickly at you.”

It has been suggested by some that there has been a power shift in north London, but Sagna still believes Arsenal have the quality to beat any side in Europe on their day.

“We can beat anyone, like Barcelona, but we can make silly mistakes and lose games. We need to improve this”, he said.

“[Tottenham] are doing better but I think every team has surprised me this season. Every team can beat anyone.”
